Project Background
Project
Background
This
project will result in improvements to the Lotus Lake shoreline to reduce
erosion. The MnDNR
awarded the District a grant of $45,000 for Lotus Lake Shoreline Restoration
through the Shoreline Habitat Restoration Grant Program. The program funds are available July 1, 2011
to June 2013. The District is expected
to match the grant funding with at least $25,000. Items to be covered by the grant funding included
plants, erosion control supplies, signs/education, and labor.
Current
Project Status
The project will restore a portion of shoreline on Lotus
Lake north of the Carver Beach Area. The
MnDNR Grant agreement was signed by Managers. MnDNR is processing
the documents. The Landowner Agreement
has been provided to the City of Chanhassen for acceptance. The agreement is being put on the Council
agenda.
A prescribed burn was conducted by team member AES on April
6, 2012, on the north side of the project area (permits were obtained from the
DNR and the City of Chanhassen). Advance
notice was provided by mail to homeowners within two blocks and across the lake
the week prior to the event. On April
12, 2012, citizen volunteers (6 people) along with AES and the Engineer
over-seeded the prescribed burn site to provide growth of native vegetation. AES will follow-up in the coming weeks and
again in the Fall for spot weed treatment in the
burned area. AES will continue to take
field opportunities to educate residents about maintenance of the restoration
practices. On April 19, 2012, the biologs were delivered to the site and citizen volunteers
(9 people) assisted with moving the biologs into
place by carrying them down the path. We
continue coordinating with the City of Chanhassen throughout the project.
